Iran, letter to Draghi and Di Maio: “Italy will join Slovenia”

“IS THIS THE REGIME WITH WHICH BORRELL AND THE EU PEACEMAKERS WANT TO REOPEN NUCLEAR NEGOTIATIONS?”

July 28 (ofcs.report) — “As parliamentarians and representatives of civil society who have always been committed to promoting and defending respect for democracy, Human Rights and all those principles that represent the indispensable pillars of our society in every location, we feel the duty to demonstrate once again , our deep concerns about the increasingly worrying situation that continues to persist in Iran, especially in recent times ”.  This is what we read in the letter sent to the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, and to the Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, signed by Giulio Maria Terzi , President of the Global Committee for the Rule of Law – Marco Pannella , former Foreign Minister of the Italian Republic, Sen. Lucio Malan (FdI), Sen. Stefania Pezzopane (Democratic Party), Hon. Renata Polverini , (Forza Italia), Sen. Roberto Rampi , (Democratic Party), Sen. Manuel Vescovi (Northern League), Matteo Angioli , Global Committee Secretary for the Rule of Law – Marco Pannella , Hon. Sergio d’Elia , Secretary of Hands Off Cain , Hon. Elisabetta Zamparutti , Treasurer Hands Off Cain.

The opportunity was offered by the annual “Free Iran” meeting during which the Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Janša, took a tough stance against the Tehran regime .

“Many of us like every year – along with numerous parliamentarians, former Prime Ministers and Ministers, administrators and activists from Europe and from all over the world – took part in the annual” Free Iran “meeting organized by the main Iranian opposition movement, the Council National Resistance of Iran, showing our most convinced support for the democratic transition of a regime among the bloodiest, especially towards its own people – continues the letter – During this last edition, the declarations of the First represented a truly solemn moment. Slovenian minister, Janez Janša, who affirmed that “the Iranian people deserve democracy, freedom and human rights and should be firmly supported by the international community”, also reiterating that “The Iranian regime must be held responsible for the violations of Human Rights” . Indeed, it is only right to remember forty-two years of medieval brutalitythey have seen tens of thousands of dissidents executed simply for opposing the regime. Protests at the national level, more and more numerous, are systematically repressed in blood. About 1,500 unarmed protesters, mostly young, were killed in a mass riot in late 2019. Thousands more were injured, with many being dragged to prison from their hospital beds, never to be seen again. All aspects of society, from democratic rights to freedom of expression, religion and sexuality – to name but a few – are simply denied by the regime. To such a precise position taken by the Slovenian Premier, who as you know very well is the current President of the Council of the European Union, can only go our unlimited, appeasement “to the regime of the Ayatollahs by Brussels”.

“An acquiescence – underline the signatories of the letter – which appears increasingly unmotivated, and still difficult to erode definitively, which dangerously threatens the credibility of the European institutions, as demonstrated by the reactions of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, Josep Borrell who wished to clarify that the comments of the President-in-office do not “absolutely” reflect the position of the EU. This is a position that makes us fear that he has succumbed to strong pressure from the regime through the Foreign Minister of Tehran, Javad Zarif, during the telephone call made with High Representative Borrel in the hours following Janša’s statements. and after the convocation by the regime of the Slovenian Ambassador aTehran “.

“Is this the regime with which Borrell and the EU peacemakers want to reopen nuclear negotiations? – He asks in the letter –  It is also necessary to remember how Borrell never expressed words of condemnation following the arrest, trial and sentence of the Iranian diplomat, and his accomplices, for their attempted attack in Paris in June 2018 on the very occasion of the meeting of the Iranian Resistance , at which many of us were present. A regime that last month staged the “sham” elections that led Ebrahim Raisi to the presidency, in total disregard for the basic rules of a democratic community, freeing the ground from any possible opposition to the candidate strongly desired by the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Ebrahim Raisi, infamous for his role as deputy prosecutor of Tehran and member of the death commissions , formed across the country following a fatwa by Ayatollah Khomeini in the summer of 1988, responsible for the massacre of more than 30,000 political prisoners .  This is the profile of the one who will officially take office as president of Iran next month. Responsibility for the 1988 massacre is long overdue and acclaimed by more and more voices ”.

“In fact – recall the signatories of the letter – in addition to Prime Minister Janša, initiatives in Europe are growing to a great extent, also at the level of the European Parliament and nationally, but above all within the United Nations. In fact, on June 29, the current UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Javaid Rehman , reiterated the urgency of an independent investigation into the 1988 massacre and the role played by the president-elect Ebrahim Raisi as deputy prosecutor of Tehran. On May 3, 2021, more than 150 former United Nations officials and renowned international human rights and legal experts wrote to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, calling for an international commission of inquiry into the 1988 massacre. Signatories to the open letter include former United Nations High Commissioner and Irish President Mary Robinson , a former UN Deputy Secretary-General, 28 former UN Special Rapporteurs on Rights Humans and the presidents of former UN commissions of inquiry into human rights abuses in Eritrea and North Korea. Furthermore, the Secretary General of “Amnesty International”, Agnès Callamard, declared on June 19 that ‘Ebrahim Raisi took office instead of being investigated for crimes against humanity of murder, enforced disappearance and torture, it’s a sad reminder that impunity reigns supreme in Iran. … We continue to ask that Ebrahim Raisi be investigated for his involvement in past and ongoing crimes according to International Law, including by States exercising universal jurisdiction ‘”.

“It is for this long series of reasons that we intend to represent the need, which can no longer be deferred, for Italy to join the ever-increasing demands for justice, freedom and democracy for the Iranian people, torn apart by decades of ferocious and bloody oppression – concludes the letter – And, especially in the EU context, we hope that the Italian government will actively join the Slovenian one – also in the name of good proximity relations – to remove from the European Union any ‘shadow’ from the long tradition of main body in the defense and promotion of Human Rights”.
