Brussels, October 21, 2024 – Alejo Vidal-Quadras, President of the International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ) and former Vice-President of the European Parliament, today issued a call to the European Union to urgently designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The ISJ, backed by over 4,000 cross-party parliamentarians from Europe and North America, expressed deep concern over the continued delay in formalizing this crucial designation, which was recommended by the European Parliament in January 2023.
In a letter addressed to European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Vidal-Quadras highlighted the IRGC’s long history of instigating terrorism, including attacks on European soil, and emphasized the grave security threat it poses. He further pointed out the IRGC’s direct involvement in international conflicts, including Russia’s war against Ukraine, by supplying terrorist proxies, weapons, and ammunition through Iran’s national airline—a violation that has already led to sanctions against Iran Air by the European Union.
“The IRGC’s actions have had a devastating global impact, tragically affecting countless lives, including European citizens and Iranian dissidents in Europe,” stated Dr. Vidal-Quadras. “Their documented history of violence, marked by the deaths of thousands and the fueling of instability in the Middle East, cannot be ignored.”
Vidal-Quadras also shared his own harrowing experience, having survived an assassination attempt on November 9, 2023, which is suspected to have been orchestrated by the Iranian regime. “This attack, like many others, underscores the urgent need for action against the IRGC, an organization responsible for thousands of deaths and the destabilization of the Middle East,” he stated.
The ISJ strongly urges the European Union to act upon the European Parliament’s resolution and officially designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization. Vidal-Quadras stressed that such a move is vital not only for safeguarding European citizens and Iranian dissidents but also for reinforcing democratic values and contributing to the global fight against state-sponsored terrorism.
