Brussels, 27 July 2025 – The International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ) has issued an urgent appeal to the leadership of the European Union and the United Nations following the execution of two political prisoners in Iran, calling for immediate and concrete international measures to halt further atrocities.
In its letter to EU and UN leaders, the ISJ condemned the executions of Behrouz Ehsani (69) and Mehdi Hassani (48)—both members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)—who were hanged at dawn on Sunday, July 27, 2025, in Ghezel Hesar Prison. The letter underscores that the two men were sentenced to death solely for their opposition to the regime and after enduring more than three years of imprisonment, torture, and psychological abuse.
“These executions are a brutal escalation of the regime’s ongoing campaign of repression,” the ISJ stated. “They were carried out not in pursuit of justice, but to terrorize a population increasingly defiant in the face of tyranny.”
The ISJ emphasized that fourteen additional PMOI-affiliated political prisoners are currently on death row and at imminent risk of execution. It warned that the continued silence or inaction of the international community will be interpreted by Tehran as a green light to proceed with further killings.
In its letter, the ISJ called on EU and UN institutions to:
- · Publicly and unequivocally condemn the executions of Ehsani and Hassani;
- · Demand an immediate release of all individuals imprisoned solely for their political beliefs or affiliations;
- · Activate relevant UN mechanisms to investigate and monitor the cases of political prisoners currently on death row; and
- · Enforce targeted sanctions against officials responsible for grave human rights abuses.
“These are not judicial actions—they are political executions,” the ISJ warned. “They violate every standard of international law and human rights. The time for statements of concern has passed. What is required now is bold and unified action.”
The ISJ reiterated that the Iranian regime’s use of capital punishment as a tool of political suppression has become systematic and must be addressed with the seriousness it demands. The international community, the letter concludes, must ensure that Iran’s political prisoners are not left to face this regime alone.
