ISJ Honors the Legacy of Prof. Rita Süssmuth and Her Support for Iranian Democratic Resistance

The International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ) mourns the passing of Rita Süssmuth — a distinguished European stateswoman whose principled leadership and humanitarian conviction stood in unwavering support of human rights and democratic values. Prof. Süssmuth’s long record of public service in one of Europe’s leading democracies gave her voice exceptional credibility. She consistently applied her moral authority to highlight the struggle for freedom in Iran and insisted that democratic societies cannot remain silent when fundamental rights are under threat. Her advocacy helped elevate the Iranian people’s fight for democracy within European political discourse.

Recognizing the impact of systematic demonization against Iran’s democratic opposition, Prof. Süssmuth publicly challenged misinformation campaigns and underscored the importance of honest engagement with the resistance’s legitimate aspirations. She openly expressed trust in Maryam Rajavi, the President of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and linked the cause of Iranian freedom to broader democratic principles.
Prof. Süssmuth also spoke out on the humanitarian plight of Iranian dissidents in Camp Ashraf and Camp Liberty, rejecting euphemistic narratives and demanding concrete protections rather than political margin-shifting.
A committed defender of women’s equality, she framed women’s leadership in the Iranian resistance as central to Iran’s democratic future — describing it as an essential component of liberation and societal transformation.
Prof. Süssmuth’s legacy will endure as a standard of democratic character and moral courage: steadfast in principle, persistent in engagement, and unafraid to confront injustices wherever they occur.
